After a peaceful night at Cheddar Gorge Caravan & Motorhome Club Site, we wandered through picturesque Cheddar to spend a day at the Gorge and Caves. Sensibly we visited the caves first and enjoyed the informative audio tour and Easter Egg hunt. We would definitely recommend to those with children as all kids looked fully engaged and marvelled at the reflections the glowing eggs made. We decided to walk the Gorge route outlined on the map, heading first up (what seemed like thousands) 274 steps to the Look Out Tower. These steps are steep – and we did “feel the burn” – but have viewing platforms every so often on the way up so those who need a break can take one. While the view from the top was stunning and spurred us onwards, nothing could compare to the view of the gorge from the ground below. There are multiple pathways for accessing the gorge: some steep, some gentle, some requiring payment and some not. There are many car parks along Cliff Road (B3135) that are staffed and require payment. It is possible to rock climb from the gorge floor if you fancy a more x-treme adventure. On our descent through the gorge, we collected some cave matured cheddar and local cider for the final night of our trip. The Bath Arms, a place for ladies what lunch, provided lovely ham, egg and chips alongside their indoor bowling alley (albeit covered by a large table). After 3pm they will not serve food until dinner, but will take last minute orders. We will be back – afterall, our Gorge ticket is valid for a year and we are completely out of cider.
