Spectacular Views and Slovenian Wine(s)

Today was a busy day… Committed to not missing anything that we *wanted* to do, we rose early and went for a little stroll to look at the view. Ojstrica, a mountain in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, has a sharp, pyramid-shaped top providing spectacular 360° views over Bled and the mountains beyond. The footpath entrance is just to the left of Camping Bled and meanders steeply through woodland, ascending 220m (approx.). While clearly marked, the heat does make it sweaty work and we would definitely recommend everyone takes a bottle of water with them – each. The final ascent to the viewpoint is rocky, steep and requiring scrambling at times. That being said, young children scampered up it like mountain goats, so maybe it was our tired knees that were slowing us down. Nevertheless, the view from the top was breath-taking in itself.

Following our careful descent, a change of clothes and a lot of water, we were ready for our next adventure. We had always said that we would visit Straza Bled and complete the 520m summer toboggan run. It has a maximum speed of 40km/h and descends 130m – quickly!

The centre was set up well with numerous activities including high ropes, zip wire, jumping onto a large inflatable, riding a donut onto a large inflatable and, thankfully, the chair lift that took us to the top of the run. At 9€ each for one turn, we decided we only needed that and collected our numbered ticket for our turn. The wait for the chair lift was fairly short and, likewise, the wait at the top was understandable. Staff took their time to ensure that those with young riders had enough time to get to a safe distance before letting the older, single riders go. I didn’t really know what to expect, but some of the slopes were very steep! Colin whizzed down and was ready to take a photo of a relieved me at the bottom! I’d highly recommend, although once was definitely enough for me!

Having walked the 45 minutes to Straza Bled, we then had the return walk to do in the full heat of the day. It. Was. Warm. Our arrival back at the campsite was timed perfectly so that we had some hibernation time before our evening shenanigans: Wine tasting with the infamous Boris!

The recommendation to try Slovenian wine came from a good friend, who said it was the best she had ever tasted. With a little help from Trip Advisor, we soon found a wine tasting session – one with impeccable reviews and just a short cycle from Camping Bled.

Wine Tasting Bled is held in a traditional wine cellar and we were lucky to be part of a small group: just us and some Dutch Interrailing students. The set up was that we were seated in pairs around old oak barrels with a placemat outlining the wines we would taste in front of us. We started with my favourite – a dry white wine that could be drunk on its own or with a meal…clearly I know what I like and won’t deviate from that! We progressed to taste orange wine – yes it is a thing, red wine that actually tasted like a white, red (similar to Pinot Noir) and then a dessert wine – incredibly sweet and not my favourite. Boris was incredibly informative and paired the wines with cheese, prosciutto and bread with oil. The two hour wine tasting was definitely worth the 35€ pp cost and it was difficult not to walk away with any purchases.

The cycle back to Camping Bled was much faster than the outward journey. We have joined the lengthening list of those who love Boris and his Slovenian wines!
